2017 Program Highlights
The Chesapeake Bay Summer Program, developed in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, has three main components: Ecology, technology, and college readiness.
EXPLORE. Working aboard “floating classrooms”, participants explore the diverse Chesapeake Bay watershed and investigate a habitat that few people are able to witness. While they travel the winding rivers and the open waters of the Bay, participants conduct biological, physical, and chemical investigations; utilize critical-thinking skills; and develop action plans to help improve water quality.
LEARN. Field-based research, team projects, and hands-on training in geospatial technologies are combined to create a transformative learning experience that goes beyond the conventional classroom. Participants gain a much greater understanding of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem through GPS data collection, GIS, and mapping activities.
ADVANCE. College visits, SAT prep, and individual counseling sessions are specifically designed to help prepare students for the complex educational and college admissions process. Participants will learn how to leverage field work and GIS training from this program to gain a substantial advantage in their endeavors, as colleges put a premium on such experience.
